What 20% Laurel Oil Means
Aleppo soap is defined by how much laurel berry oil it contains. Our 20% laurel formula is the classic middle ground — more character than mild low-laurel bars, and easier for daily use than very high-laurel bars.
| Laurel % | Character |
|---|---|
| 5–12% | Mild everyday bar |
| 20% · this soap | Classic balanced bar |
| 30–40% | Stronger laurel aroma, premium cleansing feel |
Aleppo Soap Ingredient
Made with Laurel Berry Oil from Hatay
Aleppo soap requires laurel berry oil (Laurus Nobilis Fruit Oil) alongside olive oil. Our soap is made with the same water-extracted laurel berry oil we supply to soap makers — stocked in Georgia, available separately for your own formulations.

Is Aleppo Soap from Syria or Turkey?
Aleppo soap is named after the Syrian city of Aleppo, where the olive-oil-and-laurel recipe was perfected over centuries. Today much of the world’s Aleppo-style soap is produced in Hatay, Turkey — the region directly bordering Aleppo that shares the same soap-making tradition, climate, and access to laurel berries. After years of conflict disrupted production inside Syria, Hatay became the natural home of the craft.
Our soap is made in Hatay using the traditional method and genuine laurel berry oil — the same recipe and ingredients as historic Syrian Aleppo soap, then stocked in Georgia, USA for fast domestic delivery.
Aleppo Soap Ingredients — The Short List
Real Aleppo soap has a famously short ingredient list — no synthetic detergents, no added fragrance, no palm oil, no preservatives:
- ✓Olive oil — the gentle, conditioning base
- ✓Laurel berry oil (Laurus Nobilis Fruit Oil) — the signature ingredient that creates lather and character
- ✓Water & lye (saponified) — no lye remains in the finished, cured bar
The laurel percentage defines the grade: about 5–12% for a mild everyday bar, 20–25% for the classic balance, and 30–40% for premium, higher-lather bars. More laurel means richer lather and a stronger, earthy aroma. See our full Aleppo soap grades guide →
How Aleppo Soap Is Made
- 1Olive oil is heated in a vat and saponified with lye and water (the traditional hot-process method).
- 2Laurel berry oil is added at the end of the cook, giving the soap its green core and signature scent.
- 3The soap is poured, hand-cut into blocks, and stamped.
- 4Bars are air-cured for 9+ months, turning golden-brown outside while staying green inside — the mark of a genuine, fully cured bar.
Aleppo Soap Benefits & Uses
One bar is used many ways. Common uses include:
Face & body wash
A gentle daily cleanser with no synthetic fragrance or detergents.
Shampoo bar
Traditionally used on hair and scalp; follow with a vinegar rinse.
Shaving
Worked into a brush lather for a simple, slick shave.
Sensitive & dry skin
A short, additive-free ingredient list often chosen for reactive skin.
Aleppo soap is a cosmetic cleansing bar, not a medicine. For specific skin concerns, follow the advice of a qualified professional.
Our Aleppo Soap — Hot-Process, 20% Laurel, Cured 9+ Months
Original Aleppo soap — one of the world's oldest bar soaps, made by the hot-process method using olive oil and laurel berry oil. Our soap is sourced directly from Hatay, Turkey and stocked at our U.S. warehouse in Norcross, Georgia.
What Is Aleppo Soap Made Of?
Real Aleppo soap contains only two saponified oils: olive oil (80%) and laurel berry oil (20%). The percentage of laurel berry oil — sometimes printed on the label as "Extra 5%", "Extra 20%", or higher — determines the character of the bar. Higher laurel content means more antioxidants, a stronger scent, and typically a premium price. Our soap is a classic 20% laurel formulation, ideal for both daily use and wholesale retail.
Ingredients: Sodium Olivate, Sodium Laurate (from Laurus nobilis fruit oil). No palm oil. No synthetic additives. Vegan.
Hot-Process Method — 9+ Months Aging
Aleppo soap is made in winter using the traditional qidr (cauldron) method. Olive oil and laurel berry oil are cooked together with lye at high temperature, then poured into a large room to cool and solidify. The hardened soap is cut by hand and stacked to age for a minimum of nine months — during which the outer layer turns from green to its characteristic brown-black color while the interior remains a warm olive green. This long cure produces a harder, milder, longer-lasting bar.
